This course offers a unique opportunity to explore how countries and regions are addressing one of the most pressing issues of our generation—energy production and its impact on sustainability.

Set against the backdrop of Spain's and the EU's initiatives, you'll delve into key topics such as the Paris Climate Accord and COP 26, learning about the policies shaping the future of energy. You’ll explore Spain's leadership in green product production and sustainable practices. The course will teach you to analyze macro energy systems using engineering principles within the framework of policy structures, with real-world examples drawn from Spanish and broader European contexts.

Immerse yourself in the principles of modern engineering design in Barcelona, a city where rich historical heritage meets cutting-edge technological innovation. This course transforms European engineering projects into a living laboratory, spanning historical achievements to ultra-modern developments in power, energy, transportation, and communication.

Study near Barcelona’s iconic landmarks, where the spirit of innovation has thrived for centuries, while experiencing the vibrant culture of European life. ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs will explore engineering marvels such as the Sagrada Familia, famous for its innovative structural designs, and visit Parc de l’Energia to see modern renewable energy techniques in action.

In this course, you’ll analyze engineering projects through a contemporary lens, emphasizing sustainability and resilience. Barcelona becomes your laboratory, offering firsthand insights into how fundamental engineering principles were developed and applied. Engage with local laboratories and industry sites, deepening your understanding of the engineering profession within both historical and modern European contexts.

Pre-requisites include MCHE 201 or equivalent (CHEE 201). 

This course invites you to dive into the vibrant history and culture of Barcelona, Spain. Together, we’ll explore short readings and a powerful documentary on the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) before traveling to Barcelona itself to experience history come alive.

Once there, you’ll immerse yourself in the city’s traditions by cooking a regional meal, exploring castles and world-class museums, and engaging in conversation with distinguished Spanish authors. You’ll also have time to discover Barcelona in small groups, wandering through millennia of history, art, and culture at your own pace.

During free time, you may choose to explore more of Catalunya, hike its scenic landscapes, or even venture into neighboring countries. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect deeply with Spain’s past and present—both in and beyond the classroom.

This class invites you to explore the rich history and vibrant culture of Barcelona, Spain. We’ll begin with short readings and a Spanish art film that set the stage for our journey. Then, we’ll travel to Barcelona itself to immerse ourselves in its traditions, history, and customs.

While there, you’ll have the chance to cook a traditional meal, visit world-class museums, attend a Spanish play, and even try your hand at improvisation alongside professional actors. You’ll also have time to discover the city on your own or in small groups, wandering through centuries of history, art, and culture.
