The undergraduate music theory curriculum follows a modular structure, giving ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs more flexibility and choice in how they progress through their studies.
All ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs begin by taking the Music Theory Diagnostic Exam, which determines their starting point:
- MUS 120: Foundations of Western Music Theory – for ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs needing a stronger foundation
- MUS 130: Diatonic and Chromatic Harmony – for ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs ready to move into more advanced topics
Both courses count toward the required music theory credits and are offered every fall and spring.
After completing MUS 130, ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs can choose from a rotating selection of upper-level music theory courses tailored to their interests and degree concentration.
Refer to the for details on specific theory requirements by program.
