The Center for Gifted Education at the ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ of ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ at Lafayette will once again provide enriching programs for Summer 2009. These programs offer a variety of academic and arts courses from which ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs may choose.
The Summer Scholars Residential Program is a week-long program for ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs in the 7th - 9th grades. This year Summer Scholars will be held June 7 – 12 and June 14 – 19. ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ can sign up for either week.
The program identifies and nurtures academically gifted ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs who choose daily classes from a variety of academic and arts areas as well as a course in leadership. To qualify, a ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ must present satisfactory scores on a standardized test of mental ability or academic achievement from school.
ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs who are classified as academically gifted by state standards automatically qualify for the program.
The program has proven highly successful, with both participants and parents reporting increases in academic motivation, self-concept and creative production. All ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ residents receive a discount on tuition and more scholarship funds are available for ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs whose families qualify on the basis of financial need.
Tuition is $425, which covers four courses and room and board. Among the courses offered are Electronics, Bits from Broadway, Mixed Media Explosion, Architecture of the Ages, Movie Making and Webpage Design.
The Academic Enrichment Program serves ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs currently in kindergarten through 8th grade. This program offers two-week afternoon sessions, Monday through Thursday. Mini-courses are offered in science, the arts, computing and many more areas of interest for the academically talented and creative ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵs.
The Program will be held from June 8 – 18 and July 6 – 16. To qualify for this program, a ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ must be recommended by his/her classroom teacher or present satisfactory scores on a standardized test of mental ability or academic achievement.
